Elmes, James (1782–1862). Father of H. L.
Elmes, he is known for his writings, especially as editor of T. H. Shepherd's
Metropolitan Improvements (1827–9) and for
Memoirs of the Life and Works of Sir Chr. Wren (1823). Other works included
Hints for the Improvement of Prisons (1817) and
A Topographical Dictionary of London and its Environs (1831). He also practised as an architect and surveyor: a list of his works is given by Colvin.
