Taught theology, Latin for five decades

REV. JOSEPH HREN - 1920-2009

The Rev. Joseph Innocent Hren managed to nose his way into many a student's life at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, where he taught Latin and theology for more than 50 years.

He died Sunday at Resurrection Hospital. He was 89.

Father Hren was born Feb. 28, 1920, in Chicago to John Michael and Veronica Densa Hren, who later moved to Hebron, Ind.

He became a Dominican Friar Sept. 22, 1941, and was ordained June 5, 1947.

At the school, his large nose and reputation for closely watching his charges earned him the nickname "The Hawk."
