We often hear the expression, "All this stress is going to give me an ulcer." But is this really possible? No, says Dr. Christopher Boutin, a gastroenterologist on staff at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.
"This is an old theory from the days before we knew about the treatable causes of ulcers. Now that we can actually cure them, this theory has been proven wrong," he says.
Boutin explains the only "stress" that can cause ulcers is the severe stress on someone's body from being hospitalized with a prolonged or life-threatening event, including major surgeries. The daily stresses that we all suffer ...
