Many people live in virtual obscurity, known only to relatives and friends.

Obituaries are among the few occasions when someone's name appears in the newspaper.

One of the exceptions was Alexandrine Van Ackeren and her family, who lived in Elgin for only 11 years but frequently made front-page news a century ago before resurfacing 60 years ago.
