Recycling Louis XV: Antique sofa regains original luster from careful reupholstering

If it's grandmother's sofa -- don't relegate it to the trash heap.

Reupholstering an heirloom is well worth the effort -- and the expense.

Sigrid Crawford who owns Montoya Upholstery Shop in Skokie, specializing in antique reupholstery, said old frames were well-constructed at 2 to 2 1/2-inches hard wood, whereas newer ones can be only an inch. "I've even run across pressed wood instead of hard wood," she said, and once upon a time, cardboard crept into a furniture's innards.
