Carbon monoxide detectors required by law on Jan. 1
|
Carbon monoxide is often called the "silent killer" because it's an invisible, odorless gas that can kill without warning.
Oak Park fire officials remember a case many ago where a young woman died from carbon monoxide poisoning in her apartment. The gas leak was caused by a defective water heater.
In 2002, a 57-year-old Waukegan woman died in her home from carbon monoxide exposure caused by a faulty furnace.
Fire officials hope a new state law requiring most homes and apartments in Illinois to be equipped with carbon monoxide detectors will prevent these kinds of tragedies.
