Samoyed Assistance takes dogs out of harm's way

When Kathleen McManamon, a Chicago police officer, found out about a Samoyed dog that had been tied up to a tree for three years in McHenry County, she knew she had to rescue the dog.

With a tip from a worker at the Northern Illinois Samoyed Assistance, a nonprofit rescue group in Arlington Heights, she went out to see the dog.

"Shawn had been hit by a car the day before and had a scar on his nose," said McManamon. "His ears were covered with flies and he was starving.

"But when he saw me, he wagged his tail."
