Calligraphy is not just the way Susan Gavin's students express themselves in writing or script.

It's also part English instruction, and part social lesson with a smattering of American civics for the Japanese women who take Gavin's private calligraphy classes in Chicago's north suburbs.

"Calligraphy has started to become popular in Japan now and they're living in the United States and it seems like a traditional American hobby or craft they can learn," Gavin said.

"And my Japanese is so minimal that my students end up learning English, too," she said.
