A portion of Harper College's science building was evacuated Monday afternoon after officials became concerned about a chemical that had the potential to explode.
A member of the biology staff produced a list of chemicals to be disposed of and came across 100 grams of picric acid that had dehydrated. Picric acid is explosive in that situation, said Judy Thorson, vice president of administrative services.
Picric acid is used in dyes and explosives and is related to TNT.
"It had the potential to be explosive enough that we had high level of concerns," Thorson said.
