Dignitaries, family pay respects to Payton

Walter Payton was hailed as a "warrior" and a "gladiator" and remembered as a "prankster" at a private memorial service held last week at Life Changers International Church in Barrington Hills.

About 1,000 people attended the invitation-only service, including Gov. George Ryan, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, National Football League Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and scores of former Bears players and former teammates including Mike Singletary and Matt Suhey.

Teammates and friends took turns eulogizing Payton. Former Bears coach Mike Ditka called him "A warrior, a gladiator." ...
