River shaped area's history, development

Hidden along the banks of the murky Des Plaines River are centuries of history.

If one looks closely, evidence of its earliest inhabitants - members of the Potawatomi, Sauk, Fox, Illinois and Miami tribes - can be found along its banks.

They roamed the plains and relied on the river for transportation and food. Many of today's roadways - Lake Street, River Road and Higgins Road - were ancient trails made by Native Americans.

Those early inhabitants used the river as a trade route. Native Americans could canoe the Des Plaines to the Illinois River to the Mississippi to the Gulf ...
