West Nile virus invades nearby suburbs

The dreaded West Nile virus arrived in the northwest suburbs a year earlier than expected when it was confirmed last week by state health officials last week.

In response, area officials said residents should be concerned but there is no reason to panic.

The West Nile virus has been found in Africa, West Asia and the Middle East. It was discovered in New York City two years ago, marking the first time the virus had been confirmed in the Western Hemisphere, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
