The wake-up call Thursday, March 3, was for 3 a.m. so I could pick up my neighbor, Marine Richard "Dick" Young, and drive to Chicago O'Hare and get checked in for a 6 a.m. flight aboard Continental Airlines for our visit to Guam and Iwo Jima.

Our flight was from Chicago to Houston, where we changed planes and continued on a direct flight from Houston to Honolulu, where we disembarked from our plane only long enough for them to service it for a continued flight from Honolulu to Guam. It was at this time we joined the rest of the Military Historical Tour group that departed from Los Angeles.
