Antioch resident Earl Beese was just 18 years old when he was sent to Germany as a combat infantry soldier during World War II.

He arrived there as an infantry replacement after the Battle of the Bulge, and served during the occupation in Germany until 1947.

It was during his stay in Germany that Beese, now a leader of the Lakes Region Historical Society, started a flag collection that has expanded to more than 50 flags.
