As skilled as many of them are, today's violin makers and players still work in the shadow of Antonio Stradivari. Living from 1644 to 1737, Stradivari remains one of the greatest makers in history and one of the most widely known among his contemporaries who worked in the northern Italian city of Cremona.

In the centuries since then, makers, historians and scientists have been obsessed with trying to define and reproduce whatever it is that makes Stradivari's instruments so special. Many seem to have found tantalizing pieces of the mystery, but efforts to capture the secret formula that died ...
