Elgin preserve is `fen-tastic'

Purple coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) scatter across a section of Bluff Spring Fen Nature Preserve at the edge of Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin. The 90-acre preserve was once the site of a gravel quarry and off-road vehicles before its restoration that began in 1979. A couple hike their way through Elgin's Bluff Spring Fen Friday afternoon, near the nature preserve's trailhead located at the rear of Bluff City Cemetery. A dragonfly plants itself onto a twig Friday at Bluff Spring Fen Nature Preserve in Elgin. The preserve hosts a variety of birds, insects, reptiles and vegetation.
