Ounces and pounds, inches and feet, pints and quarts still prevail in Northwest Indiana. But in the automotive and steel industries, in medicine and in drug enforcement, use of the metric system of measurement is commonplace.

The federal government advocated conversion to the metric system in the early 1970s to conform with international measures, but the public wasn't ready for the change. Congress backed off.
