You might have seen the story in the national news about a week ago. Pale, yellow deposits on the inside of a 5,000-year-old jar were analyzed by scientists who said they may represent the earliest evidence of the consumption of beer on Earth.

The finding, reported in Nature magazine recently, seems to suggest the Sumerians might have tipped back a few as early as 3,500 to 3,100 B.C.
