Lake County's 15 criminal court public defenders soon could be independent from the judges of Lake Superior Court.
A bill making its way through the State Legislature would give the lawyers more control and decrease the appearance of a conflict of interest.
It also would bring as much as $400,000 a year to the county in state reimbursements for indigent legal costs. So far, 13 of the state's 92 counties have such a system.
