Facing forward; New St. Procopius abbot to lead monastery in its mission

The Rev. Dismas Kalcic was voted the ninth abbot of St. Procopius Abbey on Dec. 30. Kalcic, a member of the abbey since 1954, is known for his leadership, love of learning and vision.

When he entered St. Procopius Abbey in 1954, the Rev. Dismas Kalcic never thought one day he would serve as the monastery's leader. "If things happen, they happen," he said. On Dec. 30, it did happen. Kalcic was elected as the ninth abbot to govern the abbey since 1894. Kalcic succeeds Abbot Hugh Anderson, who was elected by the abbey community in 1985. His term will last until Dec. 30, 2010.
