Be careful if you pick up Doug Cummings' detective thriller Deader by the Lake (iUniverse.com, $23.95); you might find yourself still turning pages at 3 a.m., feverishly piecing together clues, following up leads, desperately trying -- along with ace reporter Reno McCarthy -- to unravel the mystery of who killed Brooke Talmudge and why.
