Osteoporosis affects both men and women

Osteoporosis has long been identified as a disease that affects women after menopause, when their bone mass decreases. But, until recently, the risk of osteoporosis in men has been largely disregarded.

That is a mistake, says Dr. Maria Sosenko, rheumatologist and internal medicine specialist on the staff of both Silver Cross Hospital and Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center.

A longer life expectancy and the arrival of the baby boomer generation into middle age have focused attention on the growing incidence of osteoporosis in both men and women.
