Division II world just fine for Whitesell

Long Beach State athletic director Bill Shumard made news April 1, hiring Larry Reynolds as the school's new men's basketball coach. Reynolds' move to a Division I paycheck is encouraging news for Lewis University's Jim Whitesell and other aspiring Division II head coaches.

Division I programs rarely consider Division II applicants when searching for new hires, even though coaches who make the jump are typically successful.

"It's difficult for coaches at the Division II and III levels to move up," said Whitesell, an Iowa-born program builder with 231 collegiate coaching victories.
