Thymus gland transplant creates immune system for babies born without zB1 By Janet McConnaughey THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Doctors have implanted wafer-thin slices of thymus gland to create an immune system in babies born without the gland -- an approach that could give hope to adults whose natural defenses have been beaten down by AIDS or cancer treatments.

At least five such transplants have been performed since 1993 and were described in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine by Dr. Louise Markert, an immunologist at Duke University.
