In his famous letter to Franklin Roosevelt in August 1939, Albert Einstein wrote, "Since I do not forsee that atomic energy is to be a boon for a long time, I have to say that for the present it is a menace." Since then, atomic energy has undergone an interesting transformation, at least in the eyes of some.

It has gone from menace to boon to menace again.

Einstein's letter was prompted in part by work indicating that the energy released when a uranium atom breaks apart might be put to use.

He was justifiably worried that Germany would develop an atomic energy bomb.
