STREP KILLS COUNTY WOMAN | FLESH-EATING DISEASE: STREPTOCOCCAL INFECTION HITS TWO OTHERS IN LAKE COUNTY

A strain of streptococcal infection that killed four people and struck five others in Kane County over the past two months killed a Deerfield woman last week and two other Lake County cases have been reported recently, according to a Lake County public health official. The Deerfield woman was in her 40s and died of the "flesh-eating" variety of the disease, necrotizing fasciitis, said Dr. Victor Plotkin, a epidemiologist, of the Lake County Health Department.

Kane County officials, concerned about the outbreak, called a rare Sunday morning press conference in Aurora.
