Runaway slaves heading for freedom in Canada found safety and helping hands in Lake County where churches and individuals broke federal laws to aid them.
Several churches and private residences in Lake County provided a haven to the runaways using underground railroads before and during the Civil War.
They included Ivanhoe Congregational Church, Millburn Congregational Church, the Mother Rudd home in Gurnee, Bonner Farm in Millburn and the James Cory house in Waukegan.
Abolitionist meetings were held in a small building adjacent to Washburn Congregational Church in Half Day.
