What most people know about chipmunks they've probably learned from a couple comic sources: the Disney characters Chip and Dale and the high-pitched Alvin and the Chipmunks. Chipmunks are more accurately described as ground squirrels, a nice term for rodents with stripes that live or burrow in holes.

There are eight types of chipmunks living in the United States, six of which are restricted to western, often mountainous regions.
