Reindeer have been a part of the Christmas tradition in the United States for nearly 180 years, while the species has been in North American for around 70 years less. According to Gordon Poest, author of the book Raising Reindeer for Pleasure and Profit, the animals first became associated with the holiday after they were mentioned as Santa's means of transportation in the 1822 Clement Clark Moore poem, A Visit From St. Nicholas.
