A SOLUTION TO THE `MARRIAGE TAX'
|
There is a bill in Congress whose intention, it is said, is to eliminate the "marriage tax penalty." This name is incorrect.
It should be titled the "two wage-earner tax penalty elimination act" or "the single taxpayer penalty increase act." Why?
Because under current law a married couple with the exact same total income as a single person does not pay a tax penalty.
They in fact pay less tax, because they get a second $2,700 personal exemption and an additional $2,850 standard deduction.
A married couple who does not itemize, pays tax on $5,550 less income for 1998 than a single person ...
