`JACKAL' MISFIRES ACTION THRILLER LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER BUT FALLS FLAT ON THE SCREEN

The Jackal must have looked good on paper. It takes a character from a well-like book and the resulting movie, updates the story, fills it with a heavy-duty cast, and blends character study with action.

Somehow, The Jackal falls flat.

It just doesn't develop the necessary energy to pull the audience completely into the action.

Even the film's climax, a well-constructed sequence with strong suspense and action, ends with a whimper, relying on an overused device that has become corny and trite.

And don't confuse this film with Frederick Forsyth's best seller or the excellent 1973 movie of ...
