Mount Hope
MOUNT HOPE
MOUNT HOPE, a hill in the present town of Bristol, Rhode Island, was, in 1676, in the colony of Plymouth. It was the headquarters of the Wampanoag sachem Metacom (King Philip), the leading spirit in King Philip's War. On the east side of the hill are his spring and "King Philip's Chair," a rocky ledge from which Metacom watched for enemy ships on the bay. Metacom was slain in a swamp at the west foot of the hill on 12 August 1676. The hill lent its name to Mount Hope Bay, which it overlooks.
