Eastman Chemical says it has long-term plans to develop its custom chemical business, including pharmaceutical intermediates. Eastman announced in 2000 that it planned to sell the operation, but could not find a buyer. "Eastman is committed to the custom fine chemicals market for the long haul," says Mark K. Cox, business director, custom synthesis business unit.

The changes made to the custom business since Eastman had planned to sell it are significant, according to Eastman. "The decision to sell the business is past history," says Cox. "Today we have a different strategy, ...
