A drop in levels of the natural marine toxin domoic acid is raising hope that razor clam digging will be opened on the southern Washington coast sometime this spring.

Digging has been closed along the coast since last spring, and an October season for a bumper crop of razor clams was canceled just before it opened after tests showed domoic acid had risen to unsafe levels.

Tests by the Department of Health last week showed the toxin had decreased to less than the "action level" of 20 parts per million in all but one of three ...
