Tamaya, a female llama, was born March 12 at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park.

She is the first animal to be born at the zoo this spring. It took her some time to get the hang of nursing on her own, but now mother Serena and Tamaya are doing just fine.

Tamaya is the first llama born at the zoo since 1999. Baby llamas, also called crias, are born fully developed, eyes open and bodies covered with thick fur.

They are able to stand up and follow the mother around only a few hours after birth. A short time later, they are able to run with surprising endurance. ...
