CORONER'S SONG 
 
   The heart, no larger than a fist, is not 
   the mythic bird of fire, just common meat 
   drawn from its cage. Intestine ropes, if brought 
   to length, would stretch to over twenty feet, 
   now coil blue-pink on antiseptic tray. 
   As fundamentalist, the body will 
   not lie--all history in flesh. Just lay 
   a hand on muscle hard from daily mill, 
   where bone was broken, set again. See how 
   the thorax spreads its ribs like ancient wings
