THE TROUBLED citric acid market continues to spiral downward. Prices have been in virtual free fall over the last two years, with the US market particularly hard hit. Several plants in Europe have shuttered in what could be an early sign of industry-wide capacity rationalization and consolidation, which leading players agree is absolutely essential for the survival of the industry.
