Although it's not a sure thing, federal authorities have begun offering the first lab test to help state and local health officials determine whether patients may have the dangerous new respiratory disease spreading around the globe.

Julie Gerberding, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Wednesday that the process "takes some time." It requires at least two samples from a patient to determine if the person has antibodies to a coronavirus that's the leading suspect as the cause of the flu-like illness.
