The Greater Boston area today consumes about 20 percent to 25 percent of New England's total electricity. But there isn't enough power produced locally to meet this demand. Therefore, about a quarter of this power needs to be imported from other areas of the New England system. Increases in generation capacity and expected improvements to the transmission system will ensure that, in the long run, the area's supply will be secure.
