EFFORTS were underway last night to select a ``top-notch'' candidate for Caerphilly after Ron Davies bowed to the inevitable and brought an end to his troubled political career.

As a tired and emotional Davies announced he was to stand down as Labour's candidate in May's Assembly elections,First Minister Rhodri Morgan said it was now time for the party to ``move into overdrive''.
