The German composer Richard Wagner and the English novelist J. R. R. Tolkien both tapped into Norse themes more remarkably than any other artists.
In 1876, Wagner completed his Norse-inspired opera cycle, The Ring of the Nibelung, which symbolized the German spirit. Tolkien published The Hobbit in 1937 and The Lord of the Rings in 1954-55. These books recount the adventures of little people called hobbits who live in a world reminiscent of Norse myths.
