Rocks & Minerals

Barite from the Cedar Creek Anticline, Glendive, Montana.

Rocks & Minerals | March 1, 2003 | Copyright

Pierre Shale outcrops in South Dakota--particularly the [Elk Creek location (Roberts and Campbell 1987)--have produced superb barite crystals in the past but are now generally closed to collecting. Two lesser-known accessible Montana localities have for years generated similar specimens from a higher member of the same formation but are undocumented. This article details the easternmost occurrence, numerous parcels of BLM-administered land in what is known as the Pine Oil Field, 14 miles south of Glendive, Montana (fig. 1).
