Standing on a Dundee quay in the rain, in early April 1820. The turmoil in Glasgow, on the west coast, is on everyone's mind. On April 1 a proclamation was posted signalling the attempt of a group of Radicals to displace the established order. "Equality of Rights (not of Property) is the object for which we contend," the proclamation read, and armed rebels marched on the city on April 5. They were disbursed within a week, and many fled to avoid arrest. English spies infiltrated many of the rebel committees, and the uprising was doomed to failure almost from the start.
