Iranian officials, including President Khatami and Expediency Council Chairman Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, claim that the nuclear facility at Bushehr is needed to fulfill Iranian energy requirements. The former manager of the facility, however, says that the government insists on completing it for reasons of prestige, even though the station is uneconomic.
