GOLD HILL -- Call a PTO meeting and just about everyone in this tiny mountain community shows up.

They show up for the school plays and annual fund-raisers, too.

``Everybody cares about the kids,'' said John Hilson, father of a third-grader. ``It's the one place we all come together.''

Hilson and his neighbors fear the Boulder Valley Board of Education will tear the heart out of the community by closing its school to cut costs.
