Mark Kurlansky could be called the king of single-subject culinary tomes. The author of "Cod" and "Salt" was in Seattle recently to promote his latest endeavor, an anthology of literary food essays titled "Choice Cuts" (Ballantine, 473 pages, $26.95).
The collection of esoterica includes pieces from Mencius (third century B.C.) and Cato (second century B.C.) to James Beard and Margaret Mead.
