THE FIRST NOVEL I READ BY ELIZABETH Bowen was The Little Girls. I'd been attracted by its title, not so far from being a little girl myself, at the book-sale table in the seaside village where my family went in the summer. I paid the price--a quarter--and read it immediately, straight through. I had no way of knowing that the novel is regarded as Bowen's least successful and most obscure book. I loved it.
