A quantum emitter placed inside a metallic or semiconductor cavity behaves quite different than in free space. It's physical properties such as the spontaneous emission rate and the oscillator strength of the dipole change dramatically as a result of a stronger field-emitter interaction in a cavity. The study of this interaction constitutes the growing field of" Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics" and contributes to the understanding and to the more efficient use of the lasers.
