Frederick Douglass' birthday, Malcolm X's assassination and Nelson Mandela's release from prison all occurred in the month of February.

This month also marks the anniversary of the Montgomery, Ala., bus boycott arrests and the Greensboro, N.C., Woolworth lunch- counter sit-in.

So it comes as no surprise that February is designated Black History Month.
