The failure of the inaugural launch of Ariane 5 with its new ESC-A upper stage comes as a major blow for the European space community. The new variant of the European launcher is designed to loft 10t into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), compared with 6.9t for the baseline Ariane 5 that has flown until now.
